Let’s face it. We are hounded by fume-expelling vehicles anywhere we go. It seems that nobody knows–and worse, nobody cares–that it is now prohibited to burn tires and chemical reactants in open air.
This air pollution, along with a hundred other causes, weakens a person’s resistance to lung-related diseases. The most common of such lung diseases is tuberculosis (TB). Worse, children who are exposed to adults who have TB are at a big risk of developing what is called Primary Complex. This is the first stage of lung tuberculosis among children.
It is alarming to note that many children afflicted with primary complex are not given the proper medication. This is because the disease may not even be detected at all. Some parents misjudge the symptoms for other disorders. To ensure the proper detection of primary complex, a Tuberculin Test must be administered. But even before that, parents should watch out for the following symptoms:
- A recurring fever which usually sets in the afternoons.
- Recurring or persistent coughs.
- Recurring or persistent colds.
- A pale, pallid, lifeless look. The child may appear tired and uneager to play or perform ordinary kid-activities.
- Continuous weight loss in spite of a voracious appetite. Most parents mistake this as a sign that the child has worms. Some kids are really thin by nature. If there is no weight loss, there’s nothing wrong about being thin as long as the child is energetic.
- Noticeable lack of appetite for no apparent reason like another sickness or disease. If the child is just recovering from a sickness, it may be normal for him to lose his appetite. But if there is nothing unusual and the child has not been eating well for a couple of days that may be a warning sign.
- The child gets tired very easily. He would rather stay away from other kids’ activities. He may even be moody.
- The child develops a swelling around the neck area.
- Unusual and heavy sweating even if the atmosphere is not too hot.
Once a child is diagnosed to have primary complex, the other members of the family may be required to have an X-ray. The disease could have been passed on from an adult. A child with primary complex can not really pass on the disease to another child. It is therefore safe to allow the child to play with other kids.
The treatment for primary complex takes time. But with persistence and patience, the disease can really be cured. As in all other illnesses, early detection is half the battle won.
